Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Moses went up on Mount Nebo {NEE-bo} from the plains of Moab {MOE-ab}. He went to the top of Pisgah {PISH-gah} across from Jericho. The Lord showed him the whole land. He could see
Gilead {GILL-ee-ad} as far as Dan, all of Naphtali {NAF-til-eye}, the territory of
Ephraim {EEF-ray-um} and Manasseh {man-NA-sah}, all the territory of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea, the Negev, and the Jordan Plain—the valley of Jericho (the City of Palms)—as far as Zoar.
The Lord said to Moses, “This is the land I promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I said I would give it to their descendants. I have let you see it with your own eyes but you may not go there.”
As the Lord had predicted the Lord’s servant Moses died in Moab. He was buried in a valley in Moab, near Beth Peor {BETH PEA-or}. Even today no one knows where his grave is.
Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyesight never became poor and he never lost his physical strength. The Israelites mourned for Moses in the plains of Moab for 30 days. Then the time of mourning for him was over.
Joshua son of Nun was filled with the Spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. The Israelites obeyed him and did what the Lord had commanded through Moses.
There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses whom the Lord dealt with face to face. The Lord sent him to do all the miraculous signs and amazing things in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his whole country. He sent Moses with a mighty hand to do all the spectacular and awe-inspiring deeds that were seen by all the Israelites.
Hebrews. 3:1-6
Brothers and sisters you are holy partners in a heavenly calling. So look carefully at Jesus, the apostle and chief priest, about whom we make our declaration of faith. Jesus is faithful to God, who appointed him, in the same way that Moses was faithful when he served in God’s house. Jesus deserves more praise than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house is praised more than the house. After all every house has a builder but the builder of everything is God.
Moses was a faithful servant in God’s household. He told the people what God would say in the future, but Christ is a faithful Son in charge of God’s household. We are his household if we continue to have courage and to be proud of the confidence we have.
Luke 9:28-36
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 9th chapter.
C Glory to You O Lord.
Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with him. They appeared in heavenly glory and were discussing Jesus’ approaching death and what he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.
Peter and the men with him were very sleepy. When they were fully awake they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with him. As Moses and Elijah were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Teacher, it is good that we are here. Let us put up three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter didn’t know what he was saying.
While he was saying this a cloud overshadowed them. They were frightened as they went into the cloud. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, My chosen One. Listen to him!”
After the voice had spoken they saw that Jesus was alone. The disciples said nothing, and for some time they told no one about what they had seen.
