Exodus 20:1-17

Then God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt. “Never have any other god. Never make your own carved idols or statues that represent any creature in the sky, on the earth, or in the water. Never worship them or serve them, because I, the Lord your God, am a God who does not tolerate rivals. I punish children for their parents’ sins to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but I show mercy to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments.

“Never use the name of the Lord your God carelessly. The Lord will make sure that anyone who carelessly uses his name will be punished. “Remember the day of rest by observing it as a holy day. You have six days to do all your work. The seventh day is the day of rest—a holy day dedicated to the Lord your God. You, your sons, your daughters, your male and female slaves, your cattle, and the foreigners living in your city must never do any work on that day. In six days the Lord made heaven, earth, and the sea, along with everything in them. He didn’t work on the seventh day. That’s why the Lord blessed the day he stopped his work and set this day apart as holy.

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live for a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you. “Never murder. “Never commit adultery. “Never steal. “Never lie when you testify about your neighbor. “Never desire to take your neighbor’s household away from him. “Never desire to take your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that belongs to him.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

The message about the cross is nonsense to those who are being destroyed, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved. Scripture says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise. I will reject the intelligence of intelligent people.”

Where is the wise person? Where is the scholar? Where is the persuasive speaker of our time? Hasn’t God turned the wisdom of the world into nonsense? The world with its wisdom was unable to recognize God in terms of his own wisdom. So God decided to use the nonsense of the Good News we speak to save those who believe.

Jews ask for miraculous signs, and Greeks look for wisdom, but our message is that Christ was crucified. This is a stumbling block to Jewish people and makes no sense to people who are not Jewish, but to those Jews and non-Jews who are called, he is Christ, God’s power and God’s wisdom. God’s nonsense is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Brothers and sisters, consider what you were when God called you to be Christians. Not many of you were wise from a human point of view. You were not in powerful positions or in the upper social classes. Yet God chose what the world considers nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose what the world considers weak to put the strong to shame. God chose what the world considers lowly and what it despises—what it considers to be nothing—in order to bring to nothing what it considers to be something.

As a result, no one can brag in God’s presence. You are partners with Christ Jesus because of God. Jesus has become our wisdom sent from God, our approval, our holiness, and our ransom from sin. As Scripture says, “Whoever brags must brag about what the Lord has done.”

Luke 22:24-34

Then a quarrel broke out among the disciples. They argued about who should be considered the greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the nations have power over their people, and those in authority call themselves friends of the people. You are not going to be that way. Instead, the greatest among you must be like the youngest, and your leader must be like a servant. Who is the greatest, the person who sits at the table or the servant? Isn’t it really the person who sits at the table? Yet I’m among you as a servant.

You have stood by me in the troubles that have tested me. So as my Father has given me a kingdom, I’m giving one to you. You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will also sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Then the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you apostles for himself. He wants to separate you from me as a one separates wheat from husks. I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail. So when you recover, strengthen the other disciples.”

Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and to die with you.”

Jesus replied, “Peter, I can guarantee that the rooster will not crow tonight until you say three times that you do not know me.”
